[Personality]
A cheerful and optimistic individual like Tohru Honda would be considered really odd in this day and age, especially with the tragedy of her mother dying in a car accident. She is polite to a fault, speaking rather formally for someone her age. She is extremely kind-hearted as well. Tohru couldn't even bring herself to act like the mean stepsister when their class was rehearsing for their Cinderella play that was going to be presented for Kaibara High's cultural festival. She also cried after her mother told her the story of the twelve zodiacs, claiming that she wished to be born in the year of the cat instead.
Probably because of the way she spoke and acted, Tohru was bullied a lot when she was younger. A really cruel game of Fruit Basket cemented what an oddball she is. While everyone was assigned a fruit, Tohru was the only one who got "rice ball" (she even thought that it sounded delicious ;;). Every child in her class was running around and having fun, except for Tohru. She sat in her chair, waiting patiently for someone to yell out "Rice ball!" and let her join the game. But it never came. She realize it was because "A rice ball doesn't really belong in a fruit basket.". This experience made her sympathize with the tiger of the zodiac, Kisa, who was also subjected to bullying.
Many people have noticed her tendency to be selfless (and often commented that she shouldn't shoulder everyone's burdens). When her grandfather's place was going through some renovations, Tohru opted to stay in a tent instead, getting used to the dirt, grime and bugs rather than be a burden to her best friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima. She also got a part-time job as a cleaning lady in order to pay her school tuition so that her grandfather wouldn't be bothered by it.
One of the things that a zodiac member goes through is the feeling of being alienated and isolated because of the curse. No matter which of the twelve members Tohru was speaking to, she would always treat them with the same warmth and gentleness that something akin to what a mother would do (Yuki and Rin have both been unconsciously drawn to this side of Tohru). She would patiently listen to their troubles and struggles. She offers them words of comfort, imparting wisdom she had heard once from her mother Kyoko. She had told Yuki once that people were not born kind, that you had to learn about how to be when you are growing up.
Tohru is the kind of person who sees the good in everyone and trusts them completely. Unfortunately, this trait makes Yuki and Kyou worry over her. They both mentioned once that Tohru was indeed a type of person who would let a burglar in, serve him some tea and listen to his entire life story. She is also a regular victim of believing Shigure and Hatsuharu's jokes without fail. Kyou, Yuki, and sometimes Hiro would have to be the ones to point out that what Shigure and/or Hatsuharu going on about was a joke and not to be taken seriously.
Kyoko was quite literally Tohru's world prior to the series. After Kyoko died, Tohru swore that she will always think of her (carry her picture around...) and she also promised to graduate from high school because it was her mother's dearest wish for Tohru. The girl definitely held Kyoko in the highest regard, often quoting her mother's nuggets of wisdom and passing them to her friends and eventually, the Sohma's as well.
At the point where I'm taking her, Tohru became devastated when she couldn't answer Rin right away who was the most important person to her. It should have been simple. "Mom" But this was starting to change when Tohru was starting to develope feelings for Kyou. In a way, Tohru's vow to always remember Kyoko was her clinging to the past. She was afraid of forgetting but Tohru came into terms with it, realizing that Kyoko would have wanted her to move on and "fall in love with somebody else".
[Specialties/Abilities]
Tohru is a normal girl. She is, however, really good at cooking and cleaning. She also has a knack for knowing what to say to people when they are in need of comfort and support.
[Affection]
Oh my. Tohru is a shy little thing. She freaked out when Momiji gave her a kiss the first time they met. But she is usually really affectionate to people she knows, allowing them to get close to her. She hugs and cuddles Kisa every time they see each other. XD
[Fighting]
NO. TOHRU CANNOT FIGHT. KYOU AND YUKI WILL KICK YOUR ASS IF YOU TRY. B|
[Other Permissions]
The only thing I'm not going to allow is forth wall breaking. I think Tohru's too fragile for that. XD Everything else, talk to me first~ o/
[Other Facts]
Tohru speaks rather formally ("keigo" in Japanese), a habit she picked up from her late father when she was three but she is speaking it incorrectly. Katsuya's family kept saying in his funeral that Tohru never really resembled her father and that Kyoko started to neglect her because of her mourning for Katsuya's passing. Tohru started to speak like this in hopes of getting her mother's attention. And that maybe now she resembled her father just a little bit. She also worries over people who have minor illness. This stems from her father dying from pneumonia, which was thought to be a simple cold at the time.
